The Network explores and promotes religious faith as a human creation, affirming the continuing importance of religious thought and practice, and expressing awe and wonder in the celebration of spiritual and social values.
The founding of the network was inspired by Don Cupitt’s BBC television series Sea of Faith first broadcast in 1984, and as one of the co-founders and chair of its Steering Committee for several years, I have found it a great support and inspiration . The original TV series is available here.
There are Sea of Faith networks in Australia and New Zealand.
Don Cupitt has been a friend and mentor since I was a theological student at Cambridge. He has written over 50 books including Taking Leave of God, The Sea of Faith, Solar Ethics, The Religion of Life in Everyday Speech, Life Life.
I began in the Sixties as a revisionist Christian theologian, but I seem to have ended trying to make the philosophy of life into a respectable subject. Nobody has as yet quite been able to do this in the English-speaking world. There has, for example, not been an English existentialist. But many of us need a worked-out philosophy of human life” – Don Cupitt 2016
Progressive Christian Network Britain
Members of the Progressive Christianity Network seek a credible and inclusive way to follow Jesus. They are unafraid to question traditional church teaching; value contemporary thought and recent biblical understanding. They do not offer a set of answers but invite us to join them in asking the questions. They have an excellent website with lots of blogs and resources.
